Public DNS Servers

The addresses to type into your router or network settings, straight from each provider. Next to them is how many places each resolver actually answers from, measured by the LACeS Anycast Census rather than taken from marketing pages.

Questions

Which public DNS server is fastest?
The one with a site close to you. Every resolver on this page is anycast, so the same address is served from many places and your query goes to the nearest one. The more sites a resolver has, the more likely one of them is near you; run a DNS benchmark from your own network to be sure.
What does "sites" mean here?
The number of separate locations the LACeS Anycast Census (University of Twente) measured answering on that address, worked out from network latency. Operators often state higher numbers because some sites are too close together to tell apart this way.
Do I need both the primary and the secondary address?
Set both. If the first one is unreachable your device falls back to the second one, which runs on a separate network prefix.
